THE SPILT SHEET CONVERSATION IN GHANA’S GOSPEL MUSIC : A NEW ERA OF FAIRNESS.

PHILLIP ADZALE ALLOCATES 20% OF SONG'S ROYALTIES TO EUGENE ZUTA.

The gospel music industry in Ghana is growing steadily, with many artists releasing songs that impact lives. However, one issue that has lingered for years is the lack of proper royalty splits for featured artists. This has caused concerns among gospel musicians and collaborators.

In many cases, when a gospel musician invites another artist to feature on their song, the featured artist is only paid a small amount to cover transportation or basic needs. Once the song becomes a hit, streaming widely and trending, these featured artists often receive nothing more. This practice has led to unfair treatment, especially considering the effort and talent they contribute to the project.

In recent times, there has been a positive change in how gospel musicians handle royalties. Some musicians now include featured artists in royalty splits , ensuring that they receive a fair share of any income generated by the song. This practice shows appreciation for the featured artist’s contribution and fosters better relationships within the industry.

SPLIT SHEET is a legal agreement that outlines how a song’s ownership is divided among its contributors. It’s used by songwriters, producers, and other contributors to a song.

What’s included in a split sheet?

Ownership percentages: The percentage of the song each contributor owns

Contributor information: The names of all contributors, including songwriters, producers, and lyricists

Publishing companies: The music publishing companies for each contributor

Performance rights organizations: The performance rights organizations for each contributor

Why is a split sheet important?

It’s important to agree on a split sheet before releasing a song commercially.

It ensures that everyone involved understands how the song’s royalties will be divided.

It prevents disagreements between contributors.

How is a split sheet created?

Each contributor agrees on how the ownership percentages are defined.

The split sheet is signed by all contributors.

A  split sheet means sharing the revenue earned from a song among all contributors. For example, streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay pay artists based on the number of streams a song gets. By agreeing on a royalty split, the featured artist gets a percentage of these  earnings

A recent example that highlights this shift is Philip Adzale’s approach in his song “S3 WO,”  featuring Kweku Teye , a song originally done by  Eugene Zuta in 2013. According  to Ps Zuta,Philip sort his  permission to do a version of the song for his album which he granted without any prior agreement.

As the original owner of the said song it’s just fair to get his share of royalties.DEAR GOSPEL MUSICIAN!! have you done the needful on this subject after you did a rendition of another artists song and put it on the digital stores??

Philip sent Eugene Zuta an email indicating that he had allocated 20% of the song’s royalties to him. This means that for every income the song generates, Eugene Zuta will receive 20% of the revenue.

Eugene Zuta publicly acknowledged this gesture, describing it as thoughtful and commendable. This act sets an example for other gospel musicians in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of fairness and mutual respect.

Split sheet  is very essential because featured artists, instrumentalists ,engineers, Backing vocalists and many other creatives involved in the production deserve to benefit from the success of a song they contributed to and when they feel valued, they are more likely to collaborate more and wholeheartedly.

Adopting a split sheet raises the standard of the gospel music industry, making it more organized and sustainable. It also shows Transparency. Putting agreements in writing eliminates misunderstandings and disputes.
